For all ages, all instruments and voice

When: July 20-24, 9:30-a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
Where: Nevada City School of the Arts on Bitney Springs in Grass Valley, CA

If you're wondering what Jazz Camp is all about, here’s what you’ll need to know. At Sierra Jazz Camp you’ll learn the basics of how to improvise or you’ll improve your skills. You’ll need fundamental toolkit of 5 scales and 5 chords. We will read some simple music, but if you play only by ear, it’s likely to work out fine.

What you need to know:
Woodwind | Keyboard | Guitarists | Strings | Drummers | Vocalists

Jazz Camp faculty will teach you how to improvise using what you already know. There are many levels of players attending Jazz Camp. If you are a beginner, it’s helpful to have a sense of adventure. If you are more advanced, it’s still helpful to have a sense of adventure. The faculty can work with you whatever your skills.

Playing scales and chords is great preparation for camp. So is listening to jazz. Check out KVMR 89.5 on Thursday May 26, 8-10 p.m. when Nora Nausbaum presents her favorites. Bruce Tepper’s fine Jazz show on KVMR is Tuesdays 10 a.m. – noon. Or listen to Jazz on KXJZ 90.9 every evening after 7 p.m.

We start the day with everyone together in the Music Room at Nevada City School of the Arts. After a warm welcome, we’ll engage in a variety of music games and fun exercises to stretch our ears: imitating rhythms that the faculty plays, singing intervals, call and response.

  2. Consider volunteering some of your time. We need someone to put up posters for concerts and Jazz Camp. We also need someone who is good at grant writing. Again, Contact Us.
