JAZZ CAMP 2010 A HUGE SUCCESS!
by Nora Nausbaum, Flutist, Flute Teacher and Admin.Director

At this summer's Jazz Camp, from my point of view, both the faculty and campers were inspired by the collective energy and enthusiasm. Bill and I are re-energized not only to continue Jazz Camp into 2011 but to offer more workshops and performances throughout the year. If you'd like to help us with ideas and your time, please let us know. We are in the planning stages for the upcoming year.

A big thank you to Nevada City School of the Arts, River Highlands Ranch and Vineyards, Julia Glasse, the donors and volunteers who made Jazz Camp possible again this year.

If you haven't seen it yet there is a photo album of the 2010 Jazz Camp. Soon to come, a short slideshow video of Jazz Camp

A new feature of the Sierra Jazz Society is the True Jazz Stories blog. These will be stories by the faculty of SJS Jazz Camp. How did they get started? What were/are their influences? What are some notable musicians they played with? Stories from the road.

Coming soon!

From the Kudos section of The Union Grass Valley, CA's newspaper:

To Jazz Camp organizers
Kudos to Sierra Jazz Society and Bill Douglass and Nora Nausbaum for a fantastic Jazz Camp! Bill, Nora and the rest of the faculty, all professional jazz musicians, provided the most supportive, encouraging and generous space to learn how to play jazz. I've studied and played the flute for decades and this camp was one of the most enjoyable and inspiring musical experiences I've ever had, and left me looking forward to next year's camp! If you play an instrument or sing and want to learn more about jazz, and have fun doing it, check out SierraJazzSociety.com to learn more.

We had the good fortune to have dinner one night recently at The Old Five Mile House on a night that Bill Douglass and John Girton playing jazz. It is not often that one gets to hear world-class jazz in such a nice little venue. I would like to thank the Five Mile owners for supporting live music. I would also encourage folks to check out the restaurant and hear Bill and John.

In talking to Bill, we learned of the Sierra Jazz Camp. Our son is a bass player going to school at LSU and we took the opportunity to enroll him in the Sierra Jazz Camp last week. The faculty members at the camp are outstanding and our son really enjoyed the experience. It was so good that he is ready to get back in the groove.

Thanks to Bill Douglass and Nora Nausbaum, plus the other dedicated faculty for continuing the camp. It is a treasure for Nevada County residents.

Jazz swings and they "swung." The Jazz Camp performance last Sunday was incredible! I could see and feel the focus, commitment and love by the students for this music. Flutes, trumpets, sax, drums, piano, bass, even a sweet accordion ... joined with the pro faculty to create swinging big band and solo sounds. Right on it!

Congrats to Bill Douglass and Nora Nausbaum, Jazz Camp creators, for creating five days for learning and performing jazz with excellence and joy for this community. Looking forward to next year's Jazz at Jazz Camp!

The nationally applauded faculty at this years 2010 Sierra Jazz Society Jazz Camp made a great impression upon me and my fellow camp goers through both their eagerness to educate and the clear passion and enjoyment that they played with.

Once again, Bill Douglass, Nora Nausbaum, and the several acclaimed expert instructors pulled of an event that left each camper feeling enriched and more prepared for their future endeavors in music. The Sierra Jazz Society Jazz Camp is a great experience for every musician, beginning and experienced alike. We are so fortunate to have such a valuable program and such talented and excellent people so close to home.
